PUBLIC SPEAKER

I am a public speaker, film editor, consultant, and AAC user. I communicate using eye gaze because I cannot speak with my mouth.

But trust me, I still have a lot to say. Lol!

AAC gave me a way to communicate with the world, but having a voice is only the beginning. You also have to decide what you want to do with that voice.

I decided to use mine to share my story, help other people, teach professionals, make people think differently, and sometimes make the audience laugh too.

In my presentations, I talk about disability, cerebral palsy, AAC, eye gaze, assistive technology, accessibility, education, video editing, employment, and finding your passion.

I want people to understand that having a disability does not mean your dreams have to become smaller.

You might have to do things differently.

You might need different technology.

You might need more time.

But different does not mean impossible.

2024 Prentke AAC Distinguished Lecture

ATIA Conference — Orlando, Florida

In 2024, I was selected as the Prentke AAC Distinguished Lecturer at the Assistive Technology Industry Association Conference in Orlando, Florida.

My presentation was called “Finding Your Passion.”

This presentation was very personal to me because I talked about my life, my AAC journey, video editing, public speaking, writing, and how I found the things that make me happy.

For many years, people saw my disability before they saw what I could do.

AAC changed that.

Eye gaze became my voice and, in many ways, my hands too.

I learned how to write, edit videos, create presentations, communicate with people, work, go to college, and build my own future using my eyes.

My eyeballs basically do cardio all day. 

AAC gave me a voice.

But I had to decide what I wanted to do with that voice.

I decided to use it.

Every audience is different, and that is what I enjoy about public speaking.

Sometimes I am teaching.

Sometimes I am sharing my life.

WHAT I BRING TO THE STAGE

 

I do not want people to leave my presentation only saying,

“That was inspirational.”

That is nice, but I want more than that.

I want people to think differently.

I want educators to look at their students and think about what they can do instead of only focusing on what they cannot do.

I want professionals to understand that accessibility is not something extra.

Accessibility gives people opportunities.

I want people with disabilities to know that their goals matter.

And I want everyone to understand that communication is much bigger than speech.

A person does not need to speak with their mouth to have something important to say.

My presentations can be serious.

They can be emotional.

They can be educational.

And yes, they can be funny too because I am not going to stand there being boring. Lol!
